Vancouver Giants Medal of Valor Award

Following the success of the last two hockey season's Medal of Valor promotion at the Vancouver Giant's home games we are continuing this event and including an opportunity for British Columbia Lower Mainland dealers to participate in it!

Have you made a contribution to the Greater Vancouver Area or know someone that has? Enter to be a recipient of the Medal of Valor at a Vancouver Giants Home Game.


Criteria for Entries Include any of the Following Qualities:

  • Be an outstanding example of a community leader
  • Have taken an initiative in the community
  • Participated in volunteer work
  • Have made a contribution to the community
  • Is a local hero

Name Someone to be a Medal of Valor Winner

Previous winners have ranged from paramedics to organizers of charitable runs. So If you would like to enter to be a Medal of Valor recipient presented by Valor Fireplaces, or know someone who should, please fill out the form at: http://vancouvergiants.com/valor.

Recipients will be acknowledged during a live ceremony at each home game during the First Period when a Medal of Valor plaque is presented. If you are selected you will also receive 4 tickets to the game!

Kayley Olund

Kayley is a member of the Special Olympics BC, participating in sports such as hockey and soccer. Recently she participated in a leadership conference and is now volunteering her time helping coach her teammates and fellow athletes. She also volunteers at the Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Centre in Aldergrove providing therapeutic horeseback riding for children and adults.

KPU Builds

KPU Builds is a student driven initiative consisting of 17 students and faculty members from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. This initiative brings the University, and Habitat for Humanity, together to build a sustainable community of 28 homes in Lautoka, Fiji.

Katy Valraleau is with Riders for Ryders in the Ride to Conquer Cancer who are participating in the two day ride through the scenic Pacific Northwest on June 15 and 16, 2013. Riders for Ryders have raised over the 1 million dollars since 2009.. all for BC Cancer Foundation towards cancer research. For more information visit ridersforryders.com.

Constable Paul Kemp & Deputal Chief Lyle Beaudoin (Delta Police Department)

Constable Lisa Coupar has served Delta for 17 years and in her spare time volunteers with Special Olympic athletes and others in the community helping them train and live healthy lifestyles.

Deputy Chief Lyle Beaudoin has served Delta for over 30 years and is an active supporter of Special Olympics BC. Sitting on their board of executives, Lyle helps to promote and enrich the lives of those with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport.

Carissa Konesky, the latest recipient of our Medal of Valor, volunteers her time as a mentor with local brownies and serves as the president of the youth division for variety children's charity. She is also a member of the environment club at her school in Burnaby, overseeing the composting initiative throughout the campus.

Ray Boucher

Ray Boucher has served with the Coquitlam fire fighters for 34 years, retiring in 2011. For the past 8 years Ray has been a director on the board of the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, a non-profit charity.

In conjunction with acting as a director with the burn fund, Ray was recently elected as a regional director in the Fraser Valley regional district and continues to remain active in all areas of social improvement in his local community.

Norm Quon, the latest recipient of our Medal of Valor, has been volunteer coaching the Burnaby 10 pin Special Olympics team for seven years. In july he will be the head coach of the regional team in a tournament to be held in Langley.

Bob Rasmus, the latest recipient of our Medal of Valor, has been with the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities as a volunteer for over 20 years. He has given his time and commitment to help raise funds for the easter seals house and summer camps benefiting kids with disabilities from all over BC.

Mette Hamaguchi & Edna James

Mette Hamaguchi, principal of David Lloyd George Elementary & Edna James, dance teacher at Churchill Secondary, combined forces in 2010, brainstorming the idea of creating a flash mob to raise awareness for acceptance and anti-bullying.

In January of 2011, they conducted their first flash mob at Oakridge Centre. Tonight they have continued to spread the word, with an acceptance flash mob at the Vancouver Giants game during the second period. 7 elementary and highschool students joined together in a community partnership to spread the word of acceptance in honour of anti-bullying. This is the 3rd Acceptance Project using social media to spread a positive message. February 27, 2013 is Anti-bullying day, but Acceptance happens everyday.

With a career in education spanning over 30 years, Erin has served tirelessly as a teacher, faculty advisor at the University of British Columbia, and as a counsellor in Delta elementary schools. Her efforts to promote gifted education have had a lasting impact on countless students and families.

Cindy has been volunteering both in the community and with the Giants for many years. She was involved in the 2006 World Juniors, the 2007 Memorial Cup, and gave her time to help make the 2010 Winter Olympic Games a successful event for Vancouver and Canada.

Amanda & Marc have represented Canada in the Special Olympic Games for a number of years, both as members of the 2007 Canadian soccer team that won gold in the summer games. We'd like to recognize Tanyia Kusch from the Seafair Minor Hockey Association as a Medal of Valor recipient. Seafair Minor Hockey Association is a community based, non-profit organization that provides a complete minor hockey program in Richmond. Tanyia is a manager for two Richmond Seafair minor teams and also spends her time volunteering for her community through her teams.

Grant Saip

The latest recipient of our Medal of Valor is Grant Saip from FH Canada. FH Canada, part of the global Food for the Hungry association, is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending poverty - one community at a time. They are currently working with 10 developing communities in 10 countries around the world, helping to integrate projects in agriculture, education, health, and leadership.

At this time of year, we extend our appreciation to the many service groups that put together Christmas hampers, looking after the needs of our communities. Jamie Hunt

Jamie Hunt spent more than 30 years working for CKNW, among them, countless hours working for the CKNW Orphans Fund. He retired in 2010 but was lured back in 2011 and in 2012 become the interim Orphans Fund Executive Director. And at last week’s annual Pledge Day fundraiser, helped lead the fund-raising efforts to a record total of $1.7 million raised.

The Green Men (Force & Sully)

Force and Sully have recently been inducted into the ESPN Fan Hall of Fame as some of North America's greatest sport fans. Not only committed to supporting hockey in Vancouver, they are also committed to helping the community and have raised over $15, 000 for various charities including the BC Cancer Foundation.

Jimi Brockett

Jimi Brockett's son, Ryder, passed away from brain cancer in 2009, just before his 6th birthday. In honor of his son, Jimi got involved with the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer benefeting the BC Cancer Foundation. He started the team Riders for Ryders which has grown into the largest team in BC and have raised almost $1 million for cancer research.

Margaret Benson

At 14 years old, Margaret Benson was told she had one year left to live - because of a disease call Cystic Fibrosis. Now 40 years old, Margaret defied the odds, surviving and thriving with the life-saving double lung transplant she received 13 years ago.

Since receiving her double lung transplant, she has become a multi-medal-winning athlete, marathoner, dragon boater, popular public speaker and outspoken advocate for those requiring an organ transplant. She is even back in the classroom, teaching one day a week. Margaret is also the recent recipient of the 2012 Courage to Come Back Awards in the medical category.

Congratulations Margaret on your ability to live life to the fullest, setting an example for what can happen when someone makes the brave decision to give the Gift of Life.

Frances MacDougall

After hearing many distraught parents say over the years that they were not aware of the burn hazards in their home or how seriously their child could be injured, Frances MacDougall, a nurse at BC Children’s Hospital volunteered her time and many years to develop a program to educate new parents about this very common, yet preventable cause of injury.

This grass roots initiative came to be known as Too Hot for Tots! The program was launched last March and is now available through many public health units, parent education programs and fire halls throughout British Columbia.

Frances would like to acknowledge Dr Cynthia Verchere and the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund for their unwavering, invaluable support.

Peter Inkman

The Korean War lasted from 1950-53 and was the first international action taken by the newly formed United Nations, to curb aggression from hostile regimes. Mr Inkman was a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in Korea through 1951-52.

Hermann, his wife Erika, and their friend Wayne launched "Food on the Corner" 30 years ago, serving the homeless and those in need on Vancouver's downtown East Side. Providing home made soup and sandwiches, F-C-S volunteers no serve up to 500 people each Saturday, reaching out and taking care of those in need in the community.

Tricia Smith

Tricia is an inductee to the BC & Canadian Olympic Sport Hall of Fame and honoured in 2011 with the Order of Canada. Tricia was a member of 4 Olympic teams, winning Olympic silver, 7 World Championship medals, Commonwealth gold and is one of Canad's most inernationally decorated athletes. Since retiring she has given back as a volunteer in sport here in Canada and internationally. We recognize Tricia for her enthusiasm, leadership and dedication of time and energy in supporting and promoting amateur sport.

Lucas Teodoro Da Silva

Lucas is a music teacher at Second Street Community School in Burnaby where he runs two after school music programs teaching students how to play rock music. He has been awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal by the Governor General for hbis work conducting marching bands in Vancouver. When he is not volunteering his time with youth you can catch him playing for the local band, Ponderosas.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank distributes food to nearly 27,000 people weekly through 15 depots and over 100 agencies throughout Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminister and the North Shore. Providing food and related assistance in the Greater Vancouver area since 1982, the Food Bank relies on donations and the support of the communities to reach out to those in need.

Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

Dr. Bhurji is a child and newborn consultant at BC Children's Hospital and has been actively involved in his medical community & community at large.

A participant in many local fundraisers, Dr. Bhurji led a medical team abroad to Sri Lanki following the 2006 tsunami and was the first medical doctor from British Columbia to go to Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake.

Joy Fera

A member of the 1976 Canadian Women's Olympic Rowing team, Joy has competed on the world stage, winning two world championship bronze medals for Canada. But it is her work at home that we recognize her for tonight.

Dedicated to her community of Delta volunteering her time on numerous committess like Kidsport and the Delta Sport Council aimed at increasing activity and love of sport among young people.

Larry Reda

Larry has been involved with amatuer sports in British Columbia for over 50 years, serving as chair and trustee of the Jim Young Scholarship Program through the BC Lions. Today, Larry is Chairman of the BC High School Football Championships and continues to volunteer his time toward development of amatuer sport programs in BC schools.
